  • Can I take a campus tour?

Yes! Note that a campus visit is the third step in our admissions process. Families are invited to schedule a tour or virtual visit after they have attended a Virtual Open House and completed a Family Consultation with our Director of Admissions.
  • Do FlexSchool students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement courses and exams?

Many FlexSchool students take AP exams, which are hosted on our campuses with accommodations as needed. While upper-level high school courses are taught at an advanced level, FlexSchool does not offer College Board AP classes. We have instead created our own curriculum specifically for gifted and 2e learners.
  • Do you offer financial aid or scholarships?

Yes! FlexSchool offers financial aid for new and returning students, and reserves a portion of aid for rolling admissions. For additional information, visit Financial Aid at FlexSchool to learn about the process and view the instructions provided by our partner, School and Student Services. We invite you to submit your Financial Aid Application at any time during our admissions process to gain a complete understanding of the financial commitment to attend FlexSchool.

  • Do you require students to have an IEP or educational evaluation?

While our Admissions Team finds existing IEPs and educational evaluations helpful in determining fit, we do not require them as a part of the application process. FlexSchool considers the whole child during the application process. Once enrolled, every student receives an individualized Learning Profile, developed by our student support team and implemented by classroom teachers.
  • Does FlexSchool accept students mid-year?

Yes! FlexSchool is pleased to offer rolling admissions. Once accepted, new students are able to begin taking classes as soon as two business days after FlexSchool receives the family’s signed contract.
  • Does FlexSchool have a cafeteria?

Our campuses have indoor and outdoor seating areas for lunch but do not provide cafeteria services. Most students bring a packed lunch each day. Parents occasionally send lunch via a delivery app. Please note: all physical FlexSchool campuses are nut-free environments.
  • Does FlexSchool offer art and/or music education?

Each FlexSchool campus offers different options for art and music education which have included options like 2D and 3D Art, jam band, and more. Art and music classes may be a part of a student’s daily schedule or students may access them as a part of FlexFriday. Options may change from trimester to trimester and year to year so be sure to ask about the current classes offered by your campus of choice during your tour or virtual visit.
  • Does FlexSchool offer recess and outdoor time for students?

Both physical campuses in NY and NJ have inviting outdoor areas where we eat, play, and socialize. Teachers are well-attuned to student needs and will often host activities and breaks that allow students to enjoy the fresh air and get in some movement. Students may also request that a faculty member accompany them on a break if they would like to spend a few minutes outdoors throughout the day.

  • Does FlexSchool offer transportation?

FlexSchool does not offer transportation services at this time. Many students who are funded by their districts receive transportation to and from school as a part of the terms of their placement. Additionally, we are happy to connect families who are interested in carpooling.
  • How do I know if my child is gifted or twice-exceptional?

All students admitted to FlexSchool are intellectually gifted. Most students have been formally identified as gifted via an evaluation or a talent search program. However, because 2e students’ test scores are occasionally inaccurate due to factors such as anxiety, asynchronous development, or learning differences or disabilities, we keep in mind the Columbus Group definition of giftedness when considering prospective students. Wondering if your child is 2e? We invite you to take our free 2e Quiz.
  • How does FlexSchool prepare students for college?

FlexSchool provides college counseling services throughout the student’s high school career, including course selection, graduation requirement tracking, college search, and all phases of the application process. For a snapshot of our student outcomes, visit our School Profile.
  • Is FlexSchool a therapeutic program?

FlexSchool is not a therapeutic placement, but rather a supportive learning environment. All FlexSchool students receive weekly small-group social-emotional learning as well as on-demand counseling as needed. Counseling, SEL, and social pragmatics programming are provided by certified school counselors, who receive additional training under a clinical psychologist specializing in gifted and 2e needs.  FlexSchool students retain their own mental health care providers outside of school.
  • What are the sizes of classes?

FlexSchool campuses are intentionally small communities that cap each class at a designated student-to-teacher ratio. Primary classes are capped at 6:1, elementary and middle school are capped at 8:1, and high school is capped at 10:1 to ensure that the appropriate supports, accommodations, and resources can be provided to each individual student.
  • What is the admissions process like?

The first step is to learn more about our program at a Virtual Open House (Click to select a date and register). After the Virtual Open House, we’ll reach out to invite you to schedule the next steps, including a family consultation (parent only), campus visit, and a professional counseling consultation. Before our final step, we invite students to spend the day with us for a Shadow day in order to experience FlexSchool in action and get to better know the community. If, after these steps, everyone agrees that FlexSchool feels like the right fit for your child, you’ll receive an invitation to complete your application form. This invitation signifies acceptance to the program, and your child will receive a formal acceptance letter once the form is submitted.
  • What is the cost of tuition?

FlexSchool tuition varies by school program, grade level, schedule, and services, so we encourage parents to attend a Virtual Open House, where FlexSchool founder Jacqui Byrne answers questions on many topics, including tuition and financial aid.
  • What kind of extracurricular activities are offered for FlexSchool students?

Our virtual clubs are available to all full-time FlexSchool students, regardless of campus affiliation. Clubs begin at various times after school and include options like Minecraft, Dungeons & Dragons, Chess, and more!
  • What kind of PE program is available at FlexSchool?

Students are required to participate in a physical education program on all three of our campuses. Our physical campuses in NY and NJ offer sensory-friendly PE blocks that emphasize functional movement and do not require changing clothes. Cloud campus students have PE blocks built into their daily schedule. They are asked to complete the activity of their choice off-screen and fill out a tracker to earn PE credit toward graduation.
  • What kind of students thrive at FlexSchool?

FlexSchool students are creative, curious, critical thinkers! In addition to being gifted, most FlexSchool students are also twice-exceptional. The term twice-exceptional, or 2e, refers to students who are intellectually gifted, and also have co-occurring challenges, differences or disabilities. FlexSchool is specially designed to support the unique needs of gifted and 2e students with a suite of 2e best practices, including:
      • Intellectually engaging academics
      • Strength-based learning
      • Talent development
      • Experiential learning
      • Executive functioning support
      • Social-emotional learning
  • What kind of supports are available for my child?

FlexSchool offers a variety of supports for all students as a part of our program. Full-time students have access to executive functioning support, social-emotional learning and social pragmatics, extra time for assignments, supported study halls, and experiential learning opportunities. Families are encouraged to schedule related services outside of the school day to allow students to access our talent development programming. However, add-on services may be scheduled if needed. Please inquire about available add-on services at your campus (aide services, scheduled individual counseling, OG, etc.).
